This hand painted fan sealed by the artist is aimed to exhibit the maehwa tree painting on which a pair of birds perched on a branch for a rest creating a wonderful harmony with the beautiful lines made by the wide breadth of the unfolded fan's outline and the attractive three-dimensional creases of the paper arranged neatly. The Maedeup (Korean macrame) strand tied on the handle gives the beautiful panache to this fan.
One of the sagunja ("four noble beings") motifs, maehwa refers to the Korean plum blossom that has long been the herald of spring. Korean artists have been fascinated by maehwa, which blooms at the end of winter, and thus have praised it as a symbol of the noble spirit overcoming all hardships.
